Demonstration plot - no dig

Warrnambool Community Garden

Demonstration plot Warrnambool community garden

4x4 mt plot at the Warrnambool community garden showing the process of setting up a no dig bed.

The soil is mixed council fill, clay, sand, rocks and mostly grows kikuyu and couch grass.

We placed down very thick layers of overlapped flattened cardboard boxes, up to 10 cm thick

Then covered it with woodchips and straw

The white pegs mark the plot corners

Edging of the plots was up to the plot holders on this site, reducing the initial establishment costs for the garden comittee.

This left plot holders with multiple options, new, recycled or no edging at all

Area in front of plot shows path made with cardboard and woodchips.

Growing bed is laid down with composted horse manure from stables at the nearby racecourse

Path thickened up with more wood chips (kindly supplied by the local council)

U shape allowed access to all areas of the bed, double reach across the middle and single reach around the outside of the loop

Late summer/early Autumn, March in southern hemisphere, south western Victoria, coastal cool temperate, no frost

The entire plot was direct sown with seed

Lettuce, turnips, beetroot, broad beans, nasturtium, mizuna, tatsoi, radish

Six weeks later-abundance

Some of the progress made over the following year at the garden.  All the plots being taken up, soil creation, fellowship and adundant food production.
