Last April, here in the Northern Hemisphere, the frost had finally worked out of the garden soil enough to sink a shovel. The newly constructed fence to the north edge did help to gain a few days from the rest of the yard, by providing a micro climate absorbing the sun's radiation, and as a shield against the cold north wind.  

I used these days to dig shallow long pits - narrow where I had plans to plant corn in 6-7 weeks - then spread all of the frozen fish entrails from the winter's ice fishing along the bottom, added some greensand, then covered them up. 

The many benefits of these fish as fertilizer did a marvelous job providing for my plantings!

Three types of corn for cornmeal , three types of dry beans for soups, and three types of squash, all designed for long storage for this location's long planting Zone 5 winters, will all take space in basement storage.
