28 February 2013 Farm update

Posted by Mark Domingo about 11 years ago

After taking Intro to Permaculture, implemented swales and design as suggested.

After taking the Intro to Permaculture class, I implemented several swales at the farm.  After reviewing the farm design with the instructor, suggestions were made. These suggestions were creations of a pond with contour swales, note the direction of where all the water was heading, and noting the zones, sun, and wind directions.

James R. Diegel : Hey Win, good to see you here... just curious about your pond design actually and the methods you used to seal it... I have been researching gleying for a mate of mine that is involved in a project in an area in Central America... is that the system that you used or did you utilize some other practice?

Mark Domingo : Hey there James. Good to see you too. Created a horseshoe water retainer actually. It was makeshift at best due to time constraints. I was in the middle of the rainy season when I started and wanted to catch as much rain as possible. Found out using rocks, soil, and plastic liner around the pond would do the job. Leave the bottom open so water will permeate through. Thank you for referring me to gleying. I heard Sepp Holzer is really good at that topic.

Mark Domingo : That's great Renante. Do research EARTHSHIPS. Very durable and great for typhoon 5 shelters. If you ever stop by Hawaii from the Cayman's, I'll give you a tour.
